#39 | Third Chapter of Prominence |

|
|
Hello CRC 1252 Friends,
We’re kicking off this newsletter with some amazing news: The German Research Foundation (DFG) has given the green light for the third funding phase of CRC 1252! ???? This means we have four fantastic years ahead to dive even deeper into our research on prominence in language, now with a special spotlight on larger discourse structures and dialogue.
The past few months have been quite a journey at the House of Prominence. We've bid farewell to some dear colleagues and warmly welcomed many new faces, including Eli and myself, who joined the helpdesk in February. Along the way, we've celebrated awards, shared exciting research, and hosted inspiring events, all of which you can read about in this newsletter!
Warmest wishes, Ali

It's always hard to say goodbye, but farewells are also part of the story. Our beloved colleagues, XX, YY, ZZ have now left the CRC. Below, you’ll find a few words from them: personal reflections and a glimpse into what lies ahead. |

I am a historian. I wrote my doctoral thesis at the University of Münster on the decision-making process in the course of rector elections at medieval universities. Since September 2023 I work in Division 7 Research Management at the University of Cologne; first in the National Funding Department and then in the Major Projects Department. At the beginning of 2025, I took over the coordination of CRC 1252. In my hands various threads come together and I am the central point of contact for administrative questions. I enjoy making music: I sing and play the flute and congas. To relax I practise origami. Furthermore I enjoy reading; mostly historical novels and fantasy. |

I hold a BA in Linguistics and a MSc. degree in Language Science and Technology, and before returning to academia to join the CRC, I spent the past three years working as a linguistic engineer and applied scientist in the tech industry in the fields of speech recognition and AI. I am delighted to join the CRC as a Computational Linguist/Programmer based in the XlinC lab, primarily assisting with data processing and analysis as well as supporting experiments in the lab. Outside of the university, I can often be found in the kitchen trying out recipes, enjoying forest therapy, or learning languages — my latest project is Lithuanian. |

I am currently pursuing an MA in Linguistics at the University of Cologne. In 2022, I was here as part of the Erasmus+ exchange and loved both the city and the university so bad that I decided to return after completing my bachelor’s in Foreign Language Education. In helpdesk, I will primarily be mainly responsible for publications, the website, and the newsletter. Alongside academia, I’m also an LGBTQ+ rights activist, so it’s in my blood to queer up my work! Finally, and most importantly, I’m a cat person. |

I am currently studying for a teaching degree for primary schools with the subjects German, mathematics and protestant religious studies at the University of Cologne. I truly enjoy working with kids, they are always so open-minded and curious! Here at the Helpdesk I am mainly responsible for travel expenses and advanced payments. In my free time, I love getting lost in a good book, trying out new sports (with varying levels of success), and cheering for my favorite football team, 1. FC Köln, even if they sometimes test my loyalty... ???? |
