C02 - Tense and aspect in discourse
In phase II, the project includes argumentative orientation into its account of temporal discourse structure. Argumentative relations strengthen, weaken or contrast inferences. They determine the orientation of discourse and guide the expectations of the listener. The project investigates their interaction with temporal discourse structure with respect to the prominence of propositions. It analyses the interplay of argumentative connectors and tense-aspect forms in the Romance languages French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. The project combines corpus research and experimental methods.
